Often
called the “Venice of America,” this lively island city started as
a thinly populated trading post at the turn of the century. Seven
miles of palm-shaded white sands and a Hollywood film later
conspired to turn mild-mannered Fort Lauderdale into a town with a
global reputation for a rambunctious beachlife. In the late
Seventies, the local authorities enacted strict laws to restrain
wild behavior around the beach in an attempt to attract regular
tourists. As a result, the city has re-established itself into a
lovely resort community, dominated by a mix of wealthy retirees,
affluent yuppies, and Europeans.
Downtown is comprised of modern bank buildings and towering glass
offices. A recent multi-million dollar beautification program did
much to enhance the downtown and beach areas with parks, wide
promenades and a pedestrian riverwalk along the north bank of the
New River.
Additionally, the Riverwalk connects the city’s cultural district
with charming Las Olas Boulevard, which is lined by trendy shops,
art galleries and restaurants. From Las Olas the arching
intracoastal waterway bridge brings one within view of the ocean,
its long stretch of white sand beach filled with sun worshippers.
Ocean Drive is lined with open-air restaurants, hotels and
numerous souvenir, T-shirt and beachwear shops. Deluxe yachts ply
the countless waterways which are fronted by hundreds of
magnificent mansions, built by some of America’s wealthiest
families.
Your arrival into Port Everglades should be nothing short of
impressive as this vast complex is one of the nation’s largest and
best equipped cruise ports. |
